Creative Transformation and well being - This year's exciting programme is currently being planned. The date for submissions to give a workshop or presentation during the week is Friday 27th February. Application forms are available to download. The dates for next Summer School are 27th - 31st JULY 2009, and the venue will be confirmed shortly.

NIGAT 16th Art Therapy Summer School This year’s exciting programme is currently being confirmed, as the date for submissions to give a workshop or presentation during the week has just closed. The dates for next Summer School are 28th JULY – 1st AUGUST 2008, and the venue will be confirmed shortly. NIGAT Members Night Wednesday 23 April, at Centre for Psychotherapy – Knockbracken
NIGAT invites all members to join an evening of celebration as a collection of original artworks donated to NIGAT by Rita Simon are unveiled. The evening will showcase the launch of the new website, and celebrate the new found home of the NIGAT library and archives at the Centre for Psychotherapy at Knockbracken.

Two Introduction to Art Therapy courses are being run this Autumn at the Blackie Centre, Beechmount Pass, Belfast, BT12. These are run by Art Therapists and accredited within the Open Learning programme by the School of Education, Queen's University, Belfast. The MSc Art Psychotherapy programme, currently pending HPC approval, will commence in January 2008. However and the deadline for applications is over so no further applications can be taken at present. NIGAT Members' Evening – Summer BBQ at Knockbracken Healthcare Park, Belfast. The gathering celebrated Summer Solstice with music, movement and plenty of laughter! Beginning with a BBQ, followed by time to make own music together as a group and a fire Poi demonstration all certainly generated some energy by the end of the night.

A major UK Art Therapy research project is scheduled to commence soon and will include Northern Ireland as one of its sites. It is entitled "Interactive group art therapy as an adjunctive treatment for people with schizophrenia (MATISSE)". Click to download full details of the project.

The Northern Ireland Allied Health Professions Research Forum (NIAHPRF) formed in 2007, following on from the first AHP Research Conference in October 2006, is currently developing a strategic plan for AHP research in NI.

"Creative Transformation" - XVIII SIPE International Congress, Belfast. An international event hosted by the School of Education, Queen's University Belfast and NIGAT, in conjunction with celebrating NIGAT's 30th anniversary. The Congress, held in the Europa Hotel, attracted a rich range of papers, workshops, performances and posters. Delegates came from over 20 countries. Abstracts were in accordance with the main theme which was: “Creative Transformation” and sub-themes which were:
mental health; social inclusion; trauma; conflict resolution; mediation; reparation;
multi-cultural approaches; critical and transformative methodologies.

The first UK "Arts-Based Educational Research" International Conference. Hosted by the Graduate School of Education, Queen’s University Belfast, in collaboration with the Universities of Bristol and Sheffield. This international conference brought together a range of interested professionals, practitioners and researchers who increasingly use the arts to enhance, transform and capture people’s meanings and who are interested in advancing the arts in educational and social research. Keynote speakers included: Elliot Eisner, Andrew Sparkes, Alison Dye, Carl Bagley & Peter Clough.

Meeting held to enable members of NIGAT and the new BAAT Regional Group 20 (Northern Ireland) to discuss the future roles for both organisations. All members of either/both groups welcomed to attend. It was decided that both organisations would continue to work collaboratively.

“Signatures Withheld” Exhibition was a NIGAT fundraising exhibition held at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast. The aim was to raise funds for NIGAT and raise awareness of the practice of Art Therapy in Northern Ireland. The opening night was well attended and over 100 artworks sold on the first evening.

25th NIGAT Silver Anniversary Exhibition
This special 25th Anniversary Exhibition was to celebrate NIGAT’s history and development since its inception in 1976. The date fell within the 9th Summer School and the venue was the Linenhall Library, Belfast.

Art Therapy Conference
NIGAT held the first Art Therapy Conference in Northern Ireland, and indeed in Ireland, entitled ‘Costing Creativity’. Costing Creativity: The Integration of Art Therapy in Existing Services in Northern Ireland. This proved a very successful well attended event.
